EIGHTH GENERATION

1844. William H. Thorn was born on 26 Apr 1823 in Culpepper Co, VA. He died on 3 Jul 1902 in Hazleton, Gibson, IN. He was buried in Thorn Hill Cemetery, Hazleton, IN. The following is excerpted from an article by Vera Thorn Williams:

"At the outbreak of the Civil War William H. Thorn & Jemima & family were living on Thorn Run in Wirt County, West Virginia. He was engaged in farming on a tract of land which he had cleared. At the close of the war, he moved his family to Gibson Co., Indiana where he bought 300 acres of land in White River Township. He erected a 2 story frame house on part of this land which later became part of the Thorn addition to the town of Hazletown and was known as "Thorn Hill". The Thorn cemetery is located on this property and most of the descendants of William H. are buried there. After William's death, Thorn Hill was occupied by his daughter Mattie until her death in 1943 at which time my grandparents Harry & Gertrude Coe moved into the house. When Grandma & Grandpa died in 1961 my parents Vet & Audie Thorn moved into the house. My father died in 1962 & the house is now vacant. My brother Robert D. Thorn is the only descendant of William H. who now carries the name of Thorne.

William H. was a respected member of the Hazleton community & served as Justice of the Peace there for several years. He also operated a hotel there in the 1860's. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #1 at Vincennes, Indiana. He died 3 july 1902 & Jemima preceded him in death on 16 Nov 1901. Both are buried at Thorn Hill."

He was married to Jemima Cain (daughter of Thomas Cain and Mary Horner) on 2 Jun 1842 in West Virginia. Jemima Cain was born on 19 Nov 1824 in Preston County, VA. She died on 16 Nov 1901 in Hazleton, Gibson, IN. She was buried in Thorn Hill Cemetery, Hazleton, IN. William H. Thorn and Jemima Cain had the following children:

2676 ii. Zadok S. Thorn was born on 10 Dec 1845 in Preston County, VA. He died about 1865 in West Virginia?. He was buried in Mt. Pisgah.
2677 iii. Mary Margaret Thorn was born on 31 Jul 1848 in Preston County, VA.
2678 iv. William Wirt Thorn was born on 7 Jun 1850 in Preston County, VA. He died in Mt. Pisgah. William Thorn died young.
