TENTH GENERATION

3701. Charles Calkins Thorne was born on 23 Apr 1888 in Highmore, SD. My cousin Carol Houck gives Grampa's BP as Charleston, NE? He died on 15 May 1961 in Aurora, Hamilton Co, NE. Charles Calkins Thorne died of Hodgkin's Disease. He was at our home in North Platte, Nebraska & I remember him asking my Dad V.C. Thorne to look at some strange lumps that had popped up on his neck. About 6 months later He was dead.

My Grandad's last words on this planet were to his 2nd Wife Belva. He is said to have told her ; "I hate to go off & die on you, but I guess I'm going to have to." Moments later He was gone. He was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Glendale, CA. Aftr death was transported by train to Ca. where he is buried with my Grandmom Lillie Willis in Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Glendale, California. He was ill with Hodgkin's Disease. Philip V. Thorne Notes:

His residence at death was 202 E. 16th St., York, NE. My grandpa was a very funny man. He lived many miles away and loved arriving unannounced and making lots of racket to surprise my dad. His uncle Marvin Calkins had a son named Charles Calkins. I suppose this is from whence, came my grandad's name. As I sit here, I just realized that I only remember being in my grandfather Thorne's home twice (& he never knew his grandparents). Perhaps this is the reason, I have pursued this history so far.

My Grandpop was a really committed kind of guy. I have nothing but wonderful memories from him. I remember how great a hunter & shot, he was. He loved fishing more than anyone I have known. He was a true woodsman, having done this project on my family, I understand Charles Calkins Thorne, much more. He was my Grandfather & my sister & I loved him deeply.

It always hurt me deeply, when, as a young child, I constantly heard that another Grandson was his favorite. And there I was, the only one to carry on his Family name after my Uncle Don's son died. I am 51 years old, why would that still bother me?

Charles Calkins Thorne was 31 years 11 months 24 days of age at the birth of his last child, Donald Vincent Thorne.

He was married to Lillie Adelia Willis (daughter of James Willis and May (Miriam) Amanda Knight) on 1 Jan 1908 in York County, NE. They were married by H.F. Gilbert, Minister, the Marriage License No., was 10144. I sent for the original document, it is missing. Lillie Adelia Willis was born on 21 Jan 1886 in Waco, York County, NE. She was born on a farm near Waco, NE. She graduated in 1900 in High School. She was buried in Apr 1951 in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Glendale, CA. She died on 4 Apr 1951 in Lakeview Terrace, CA. I believed my Grandmom died of leukemia. Lillie Willis-Thorne was 65 years, 2 months & 14 days of age at her death. She was baptized in Stewart Township, York County, NE. She was ill with Cancer of lymph nodes. Philip V. Thorne Notes:

Began college at 16 (York College). She died of leukemia. I didn't know her but her kids loved her dearly. She was religious & strict. Her SS No. was 508 10 0062 issued 4 May 1937.

As of 18 June 1942, Lillie & Charlie were living at 321 W. 2nd St, North Platte, NE.

Lillie Adelia Willis-Thorne, was my grandmother. My dad, Voyle, always quoted her as saying "Don't ever look back." She did not. So I am doing that for her. Charles Calkins Thorne and Lillie Adelia Willis had the following children:

child+4472 i. Vivian Beulah Thorne.
child+4473 ii. Voyle Charles Thorne.
child+4474 iii. Lillian Verle Thorne.
child+4475 iv. Geraldine Mae Thorne.
child+4476 v. Donald Vincent Thorne.

He was married to Belva Thorne about 1955 in California?. Belva Thorne was born on 23 Jul 1888 in Tennessee. She died in Feb 1981 in California. Philip V. Thorne Notes: Don't know her maiden name but she married my Granddad very late in life. She was a WONDERFUL woman!
