Mar 1997; following notes by descendant Richard Thorne;
Stephen Thorne was a Loyalist during the Revolutionary War as were many of his family and was certainly typical of most Long Island familes at this time. He was a Captain in the British Army and after the war he refused to give his loyalty to the new American Government. In 1783 after the Peace Treat ws signed he left Long Island with his children, his servants and his house(!) He resettled in Granville, Nova Scotia and was given compensation by the British Government for remaining loyal. (Edward, his son,. however, did not get any compensation; his claim was disallowed.) Stephen was one of the founders of the Anglican Church established at Karsdale.
The foundation of the original house can be found on the property which remains in the hands of the desendants of his second wife.

Edward Thorne, Stephen's son, settled on land called Thorne's Cove which is just west of Karsdale. Richard, another of Stephen's sons, settled in Digby; son Philip settled in eastern Annapolis County; son James stayed with Stephen.
