FOURTH GENERATION

159. Samuel Thorn was born on 12 Jul 1696 in Flushing, Long Island, NY. Samuel Thorn/e's year of birth can be found in the records of the Flushing Monthly Meeting for the Religous Society of Friends. He died in 1759 in Rumbout Precinct, Dutchess Co., NY. the death in 1759 of Samuel Thorne was noted in the Flushing Friend's Records. Had Samuel & Father Joseph not remained good Quakers this note would have never occured.

He owned land in New Hackensack & died there in 1759. He is no doubt buried there. It's interesting that most of his kids from 2nd marriage ended up in Dutchess Co. & they all appear to have dropped the E from Thorne as He did. However in the first marriage not all of the sons dropped the E. I suspect most of the ones who followed the Quaker religion, perhaps retained it. He was Quaker. Samuel was no doubt named after his mother's nearest brother in age, Samuel Bowne.
All of Samuel's sons, except Thomas, who was Quaker, by both marriages, were Loyalists. Samuel sat out the Revolutionary War in White Plains, NY. He clearly sided with the crown privately. Samuel built a famous old structure in Dutchess Co., known as the OLD HOMESTEAD (located in New Hackensack, Dutchess Co., NY). This property was left by him, for his son by his second marriage Dr. Stephen Thorne.

Samuel Thorne was a large land speculator & on one land transactions, He and his partners bought 5000 acres of land in New Jersey.

It was many of Samuel's offspring that were to drop the "E" of the name Thorne.

He was married to Ann Stevenson (daughter of Thomas Stevenson Jr. and Anne Field) on 9 Dec 1715 in Newtown, Nassau, NY. SAMUEL THORNE & ANNE STEVENSON WERE MARRIED IN THE HOME OF BENJAMIN FIELD IN NEWTOWN THIS COULD A BROTHER OF HER MOTHER ANNE OR HER GRANDAD'S BROTHER BENJAMIN FIELD. Ann Stevenson was born about 1696 in Newtown, Nassau, NY. She died on 19 Mar 1724 in Flushing, Long Island, NY. She was Quaker. Samuel Thorn and Ann Stevenson had the following children:
