I received a copy of a letter from the Mayor of Pendleton, OR, dated 18 May 1984, addressed to Rev Gene Smith who had just delivered a Memorial address at the Death of Dutch Thorne. It is reprinted below:

Dear Rev Smith:

I have just returned from the memorial services for my friend "Dutch" Thorne. In all my life, I don't think I have ever attended a more moving memorial to a friend. Your thoughts were coming from your heart & you were speaking for the family & the community. As Abraham Lincoln stated "God must have loved the common man, as he sure wouldn't have made so many of us" I would say "Dutch" was in the category of the common man but with a heart of gold & loved by everyone. Thanks again for the beautiful memorial to my friend "Dutch" Thorne.
