SEVENTH GENERATION
862. Joseph Thorne
was born in 1780 in Gloucester Co, NJ. He was buried in Sep 1863 in Fisher
Cemetery, Jackson County, MI. He died on 7 Sep 1863 in Pulaski, Jackson County,
MI. He was Quaker. Philip V. Thorne Notes:
Son Joseph Thorn is remembered in Richard Thorne's will (died Camden, NJ on 27
APR 1816) as "my son Joseph, should he ever return to this country".
In "Genealogies of Long Island Families" Volume II, page 252 it is
speculated that he was a Tory. As this Joseph was born in 1780 (if our connection
is correct) that is not likely.
According to Zelda Norman Thorne, now deceased (author of Thornes & Allied
Families). This Joseph Thorne is the same Joseph, listed as son, in father Richard's
will of 1813. The will provides Joseph Thorne with $3,600 "Should he be
living & returns to this country". According to Zelda Thornes family
sources, their Joseph's father was this Richard Thorne!
As we have no clear way of proving or disproving this, we will take it as submitted.
This Joseph Thorne was definitely of the William Thorne & Susannah Booth
family being of Gloucester County, N.J. Hopefully future research will enable
us to make the connection with better documentation..
Descendant Stuart Thorne indicates that this was info taken from family sources.
Indeed in her book Zelda had been in communication with Perry M. Thorn, son of
Abram Thorne & grandson of Joseph & Abigail Eddy Thorne. It's highly
improbable that Joseph Thorne would NOT have told his son Abram, who his parents
were. I think it is reasonable to accept the source info as credible given the
short number of generations involved. Further info from Perry M. Thorne shows
that Joseph Thorne was in northwestern NY as early as 1805. Given this knowledge,
combined with the fact that Joseph Thorne married into a staunch Quaker family
plus the fact that their new community was wholly Quaker based and this area's
proximity to Canada, leads me to further believe that Zelda Thorne was correct!
Following the revolutionary war, there was a large & substantial Quaker movement
from New Jersey to Canada. This movement went on for nearly 20 years & many
of these folks later returned to the United States. These Quakers left following
family, who had been Loyalists, others left for person reasons. I suppose the
mandatory "Oath of Allegiance" presented a severe problem to any conscientious
Quaker. This Joseph Thorne was definitely a Quaker otherwise there would have
been no marriage to Abigail Eddy, who was herself the daughter of a strict &
devout Quaker!
A further reading of the Zelda Norman Thorne work convinces me that she had firm
family knowledge back through ancestor Henry Thorn but was not certain who his
father was. She incorrectly speculated that his line was through William, a son
of Joseph Thorne & Mary Bowne. Zelda had properly identified Henry's father
as a William Thorne but the link runs through William Thorne & Catherine
Linnington to William Thorne & Winnifred Linnington on to William Thorne
& Susannah Booth. (THIS IS ACCURATE IF THE NYG&B IS CORRECT)
He was married to Abigail Eddy (daughter of Jacob Eddy
and Susannah Sprague) about 1805/6.
Abigail Eddy was born on 24 Nov 1791 in Rutland, VT. She was buried
in May 1865 in Fisher Cemetery, Jackson County, MI. She died on 12 May 1865
in Pulaski, Jackson County, MI. She was Quaker. Joseph Thorne and Abigail Eddy
