Obtaining Military Records

National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) web site.
National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) - federal repository for records of US Government civilian and military personnel (fire of 1973 destroyed many Army and Air Force records). There are no records online available from this site but it tells you where to call or email for information.
Master Guide to Army Records held by various governmental agencies including personnel records and unit histories.
How to order military service and pension files from the National Archives
Get NATF Form 80 (the form you need for requesting military and pension records for service prior to WW1) tells how to get it by email
